How museum and society collections complement official county files.
The Indiana State Library’s Whitley County research guide names the Whitley County Historical Museum and local genealogy resources among places for future research. Historical organizations may preserve photographs, family files, ephemera, vertical files, oral histories, artifacts, and indexes that government offices were never created to maintain.
What the source can establish
Approach a society with a focused subject, date range, place, and list of sources already checked. Ask for a catalog description or collection identifier before requesting a broad surname search. When a file contains donated notes, distinguish the donor’s statements from documents created by a court, church, business, newspaper, or public office.
